Why do I get a security alert when trying to download?
If you are using Internet Explorer version 6 or higher, you may get the following Security warning when you try to download:

"Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded."

If this is the case, please follow the steps below before trying to download again:
1) Select "Tools" from the Internet Explorer menu.
2) Select "Internet Options" from the drop-down menu.
3) In the window that appears, please select the "Security" tab.
4) Select "Internet" in the Web content zone area in the top of the window.
5) In the slider in the lower left side, lower the setting from "High" to "Medium" or try selecting the "Default Level" button.
6) Click "OK"
7) Now you can download files.
8) To reset your security settings, repeat steps 1-5 but set the slider back to "High" in step 5.

I lost my key. How do I get a new one?
No problem, just send me an email with the name and email address you used when ordering. The more information you provide the better. Once verified, I'll email you your new one.

How can I order without a credit card?
You can order by PayPal, Check (US or UK), International Money Orders or Bank Wire.

If you don't want to give your credit card information over the web, you can order using the phone, fax or regular mail. Just press the "Order" button on the Store page and it will take you through the process.

Note that all these options add an extra $3 processing to your order.

I can't seem to download the full version.
You need a valid unlock key, which you must purchase. Note that Starships Unlimited uses new keys in version 3.5, so you may need to request a new key from me.

To download, you need to turn off multiple streams (accelerated mode) on your download manager (like GetRight), if you have one. The files are small enough, that you don't need accelerated mode. If you can't temporarily disable your download manager, consider using another browser to download the game.

You may need to temporarily disable your firewall (e.g. Zone Alarm Pro, Norton Internet Security) as they can interfere with your requests.

Are upgrades free?
Yes, except for "Starships Unlimited Divided Galaxies", which is an offshoot of the series. I do reserve the right to change this policy at any time, though.
Back to Questions

Where's the unlock key I ordered?
Check the email receipt that was sent to you. If you can't find it, I'll send it to you again. That email contains your unlock key. When ordering both, a second email will be send to you with your Battleship Chess key.

If you ordered by check, fax, PayPal, phone or regular mail, then it takes longer to process. I've seen mail orders take more than 2 weeks to get processed. If you ordered by phone or fax, double check to see that you actually phoned or faxed, as sometimes people forget to do it.

How come you haven't replied to my email?
I suggest you try emailing me again (possibly with a different email address) as the things I list below can happen to me too. I usually respond to emails within 24 hours, usually a lot sooner. But I've seen my replies get bounced back, meaning you never get to see them. Here's some reasons.
You mistyped your email address or used a different one than normal.
With all the spam we all get these days, you accidentally deleted my email.
Someone who also uses your computer deleted it or marked it as read.
You're running a spam filter and the response is mistakenly labeled as spam. Check your delete or bulk mail folder.
If you're an AOL or CompuServe user, ensure that you aren't blocking all non-AOL and non-CompuServe email addresses.
Back to Questions

Can I install the latest version over an older one?
Yes, in fact, this is recommended. The installer will default to your old directory. If you've bought an unlock key, installing it into a new directory will require you to re-enter your key.
Back to Questions

What if I accidentally order twice?
Let me know and I'll refund the duplicate orders, no matter how late you find out. I try to spot them myself, but can sometimes miss them.

How do I report bugs in the game?
You can either post something in the ApeZone discussion forums, under Tech Support, or email me.

It's useful to sometimes get a saved game that shows the problem. You can attach a saved game file to your email.

Saved games are in the Games subfolder of the game's folder (names like autosave.sav). There's always an "Attach" button in email programs. Just press this button and it will prompt you for a file.

What's an unlock key and how do I use it?
An unlock key is given out when you purchase the full version of the game.

The key is emailed to you in your receipt email. It's important to save this email.

The key is used to go to the download page and download the latest full version (not the demo) of the game.

Once you install the full version, it will ask you for your unlock key, which you should enter to make the full version fully functional. You should never share your unlock key with anyone.

I keep losing in Starships Unlimited. Help!
Here's some helpful pointers (also look in the game's help files under "Getting Started"):
Play on the easiest level and give yourself some advantages.
Keep an eye on your cash flow. As you gain a new freighter route, your cash flow will grow. Take *some* of that cash flow and use it to train some scientists on your world. Just a bit at a time. Later, train some engineers. You want to win the tech race.
Add some armor or shields to protect your starships.
When in ship-to-ship combat, pause the game and move your cursor over the enemy ships and see what they have on board. Consider copying a design if it plays well. Hit the 'B' key to break the battle and return home if the enemy is too tough.
Try taking manual control of your starships while in combat. Go to the Settings popup and toggle the "Starship captain is handling combat" until it reads "I'm handling combat".
When your ship designs have a lot of energy-using techs like shields, energy weapons and drives then you *must* add enough power Generators to feed them. If you don't then it will take a long time for shields and energy weapons to recharge. Consider adding some non-energy-using techs like armor or missiles.
Research Laboratories and build them on your worlds as soon as possible. Ditto for Nano Factories.

What's "Starships Unlimited Divided Galaxies"?
It's an offshoot of Starships Unlimited version 2.3 that I co-developed with Matrix Games. You may get lucky and still find a copy in retail or at the Matrix Games website.
